Mexbourne Dance Company is a non-profit group dedicated to promoting Mexican culture in Australia, through joyful folk dance and music.

Since its creation in 2003, the group has performed in a variety of events, from charitable and non-charitable events to major multicultural festivals in Victoria.

The group participates in several events ranging from major cultural Festivals including: Moomba, PakoFesta in Geelong, Chilean and Latin American Festival, MexFest, Jhonston St. Fiesta, to small charitable and non-charitable events in senior houses, universities, community centres, etc.

We want to help increase multicultural awareness in Victoria through showing our love for our traditions and rich culture.

We enjoy sharing a bit of ‘home’ in our new home and want to be able to keep our traditions alive.

Mexican folk dance is a mix of different cultural traditions. Its historical roots is the synthesis of indigenous, European and African cultural influences but it continues to evolves with influences from modern pop culture. It is not one particular style but rather a collection of various regional and ethnic traditions. Dance traditions vary widely over Mexico’s expanse.

Today, traditional Mexican folk dance is a defining element of Mexico’s popular culture nationally and internationally. Preservation and promotion of dances nationally have depended on whether they are seen as part of Mexico’s national identity. It is one of the few areas where indigenous practices are conserved and promoted rather than depreciated or eliminated.
